How to Experience K-Pop Culture in Seoul

GoSeoul Edit Team Updated Mar 2026 4 min read

If you are traveling to Seoul as a massive K-Pop fan, the city is a treasure trove of merch stores, agencies, and idol-owned cafes. While actually bumping into a BTS or BLACKPINK member on the street is incredibly rare, you can immerse yourself fully in the booming Hallyu (Korean Wave) culture.

1. Entertainment Agency Spaces

Gone are the days when fans just stood outside the front doors of SM or JYP waiting for a glimpse. Agencies now have massive official spaces for fans.

2. K-Pop Merchandise Hunting

If you want to buy albums (complete with the photocard lotteries) and official merch, skip the tourist shops in Myeongdong and head to the mega-stores.

WithMuu (located in various malls like AK Plaza Hongdae) is a dedicated K-Pop store boasting massive walls of albums and lightsticks. Ktown4u in COEX is another massive hub that regularly hosts fan sign events and pop-up cafes for newly debuting artists.

3. Birthday Cafes (Cupsleeve Events)

A unique Korean fan culture is the "Birthday event." When an idol has a birthday, their fans will rent out local cafes, decorate them floor-to-ceiling with photos, and serve specialty drinks that come with custom "cupsleeves" and photo cards.

You can find hundreds of these events happening around Hongdae and Seongsu-dong every weekend. Check Twitter (search the idol's name in Korean along with "생일카페" or "카페") to find a map of locations.

4. Music Show Broadcasts

Watching a live broadcast of shows like M Countdown, Music Bank, or Inkigayo is the holy grail for a K-Pop fan. However, it is incredibly difficult for a tourist.

Entrance prioritizes official fan-club members with physical albums and streaming proofs. However, some shows (like SBS The Show) offer paid tour packages through operators like Trazy or Klook that guarantee entry for foreigners. Book these months in advance.
